We came fourth in the Scottish Final with Into the Mist (out of 8) which is great! Even better, we won the trophy for best stage decor. A coveted trophy! The play was very well received.We are off to another festival in May – will have many fingers crossed for that Festival having been runners up twice in the past and Gordon having won Best Actor one year! Maybe we can get Best Actress for Glenda’s portrayal of Margaret this time.

The second play is another gem from respected local playwright Helen Wyngard. The woman is a treasure and she has penned a beautiful piece about another treasure, the actress Margaret Rutherford. Into the Mist is superbly crafted, offering two actors the gift of perfectly balanced light and shade – comedy and terrible sadness. Rutherford is depicted as a shadow of her former self, every now and then shining again in the light, and if only for a moment. Her husband, and her rock, is strong and sensitive and funny, second-guessing her every need, and supporting her to the bitter end. Together, these two take us on a touching journey that reminds us how fragile we are.

It is rewarding to experience a short and sweet piece of theatre which affords the audience not only a snapshot of a famous actor, but takes them on an intimate and emotional journey. This was the case last weekend with “Into the Mist” (produced and directed by Helen Wyngard) a vignette of the later life of Dame Margaret Rutherford. The story plays out through glimpses of Margaret Rutherford’s past stage and film triumphs in hilarious and robust detail – contrasted with brief but troubling memories of her earlier family life. Joy Marshall, whose entrance immediately captured the bewilderment of the star’s developing dementia, portrayed the essence Margaret Rutherford’s stage presence as we remember her. Our insight into this personal tragedy was enhanced by the devoted care of her husband, Stringer Davis, played by Errol RJ Morrison who completed the cast without “upstaging” the star. Together they created an excellent partnership which not only entertained, but poignantly brought to the surface personal memories for those whose families have been touched by the “long goodbye” of Alzheimer’s.
